On-Campus Degrees: Doctoral

Graduates of master's degree programs may go on to earn a Ph.D., or Doctor of Philosophy. The Ph.D. is earned after five or more years of intensive graduate-level coursework and research, and remains the highest academic degree granted. A doctoral degree requires students to prove their expertise in their specialty and complete original research leading to a publishable dissertation. The U.S. Census notes an annual income of about $80,000 for a Ph.D. A Ph.D. remains the typical qualification for both research and clinical counseling psychologists. This degree qualifies graduates to teach at the college level or to hold top administration positions in colleges and universities.
