Not to be confused with physician assistants who perform more clinical tasks, medical assistants may have purely administrative responsibilities depending on the needs of the employer. Administrative medical assistants work behind the scenes at physicians' offices and hospitals preparing billing statements, arranging lab work, answering telephones and greeting patients. Clinical medical assistants perform basic clinical tasks such as recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures and assisting physicians during examinations. Medical assistants saw mean annual wages of $28,270 in 2007, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. The majority worked in physicians' offices, though medical assistants could also be found in general medical and surgical hospitals and outpatient care centers.
